The Outdoor Council of Canada Field Leader Course

November 21 @ 9:00 am - November 22 @ 3:00 pm MST
$393.75

Winter transforms the landscape into a world of adventure, challenge, and discovery. The OCC Winter Field Leader course focuses on developing the skills, judgment, and leadership qualities needed to safely and confidently lead groups in winter environments while providing a practical framework for assessing and managing seasonal risks.

Effective outdoor leadership cannot be learned solely in a classroom—it is built through direct experience and immersion in the outdoors. That’s why this course takes place in the heart of the backcountry, surrounded by the spectacular winter scenery of Elk Lakes Provincial Park.

Over the course of this overnight adventure, you’ll travel into Elk Lakes Cabin, develop your leadership abilities through hands-on learning, and earn a nationally recognized outdoor certification. Along the way, you’ll connect with a community of passionate, like-minded outdoor enthusiasts while exploring one of the Rockies’ most beautiful winter landscapes.

Whether you’re an educator, guide, outdoor professional, or simply someone looking to expand their leadership skills, this course offers the perfect blend of professional development, adventure, and unforgettable mountain experiences.

Course Itinerary

November 17 | Pre-Trip Meeting (7:00–8:00 p.m.)

Join your fellow participants for a virtual Meet & Greet designed to ease any pre-trip apprehensions, answer questions, and help you get to know your future adventure buddies.

During this session we will:

  • Review the itinerary and waiver
  • Discuss packing and gear recommendations
  • Review the menu and meal planning
  • Cover safety procedures and emergency protocols
  • Answer any final questions before departure

November 21 | Day 1

Participants will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre before convoying to the Elk Pass Trailhead.

Depending on snow conditions, we will either hike or snowshoe into Elk Lakes. Snowshoes and traction devices are available for participants, ensuring we are prepared for whatever conditions the mountains provide.

The journey to the hut covers approximately 10 km through spectacular mountain scenery. Along the way, participants will engage with Winter Field Leader concepts through experiential learning activities, discussions, and practical leadership opportunities.

Upon arrival at the Elk Lakes Cabin, you’ll have time to settle in and enjoy complimentary appetizers and charcuterie before preparing your own dinner using the hut’s kitchen facilities. The evening concludes with course discussions, mountain camaraderie, and a campfire under the winter sky.

November 22 | Day 2

The morning begins with a short local adventure around the hut area, followed by the final course assessment.

Participants will then have the opportunity to practice and refine their leadership skills while taking turns leading portions of the hike back to the trailhead.

Our goal is to return to the Elk Pass Trailhead no later than 3:00 p.m.
