Course Overview
The Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Overnight Leadership Course is an immersive training program designed for outdoor leaders seeking to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to safely plan and lead overnight camping and backcountry experiences.
Over two days, participants will engage in a combination of classroom learning, practical field instruction, and overnight field experience. Training emphasizes leadership judgment, risk management, trip planning, group management, and backcountry campcraft while providing hands-on opportunities to practice and refine leadership skills in real outdoor environments.
Course Includes
- Overnight field experience and practical camping instruction
- Your own private campsite during the training program
- Professional instruction from experienced outdoor educators
- Pre-course readings and assignments provided prior to the course
- Field-based practical scenarios and competency assessments
- Leadership exercises, peer facilitation opportunities, and guided debriefs
- Training in:
- Overnight trip planning and logistics
- Campsite selection and setup
- Risk management and emergency preparedness
- Group leadership and decision-making
- Outdoor ethics and environmental stewardship
- Campcraft, cooking systems, and equipment management
Successful completion of all practical activities and assessments is required to receive Outdoor Council of Canada Overnight Leadership certification.
Prerequisites & Eligibility
Participants must:
- Hold a current OCC Field Leader Certification
- Maintain active membership with the Outdoor Council of Canada
- Commit to participation in ongoing professional development within the OCC Continuing Development Program (CDP)
This course is intended for outdoor leaders looking to advance their overnight leadership competencies and gain practical experience leading groups in backcountry settings.
Equipment Requirements
Participants are responsible for bringing appropriate overnight and camping equipment, including:
- Tent or shelter system
- Sleeping bag and sleeping pad suitable for seasonal conditions
- Personal camping equipment and camp kitchen supplies
- Appropriate clothing and footwear for variable mountain weather
- Headlamp, water bottles, and personal items
Some equipment may be available to borrow or rent upon request.
Accommodation
Limited accommodation options may be available for participants travelling from out of town, including:
- Rustic camping spaces
- Yurt accommodations (subject to availability)
