Outdoor Council of Canada Winter Field Leader Course

Winter can be a magical season, and offers unique opportunities to experience the landscape in a different way. The Winter Field Leader course focuses on the leadership skills and attributes required to take a group outdoors during the colder months and provides an effective framework for managing risks. Learning to be an effective outdoor leader requires direct experience and immersion in a winter environment. This course will have an pre-trip online meet-and-greet, but the bulk on the learning will be completed in the trail, on a fun filled day of learning out on the winter landscape. Participants will also get to experiment with two different ways of winter travel using hiking cleats and snowshoes (snow dependant). To qualify for OCC Winter Field Leader Certification, participants must attend all sessions and actively participate in activities. There is some pre-reading and quizzes involved prior to the course.
Online Pre-Trip Meeting: Monday November 24, 2025 (7:00 – 8:00 PM)
Field Day: Sunday, November , 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Black Prince Loop, Peter Lougheed)
