Field Leader (Hiking)
May 20 @ 5:30 pm - May 23 @ 9:00 pm MDT
$250
This course is a certification course for leaders taking people into simple hiking terrain. The focus is on building the skills required to plan and deliver a high-quality experience for your group on a hiking trip including minimizing the chance of an accident. Successful graduates will receive the Outdoor Council of Canada Field Leader (Hiking) certification and a one-year OCC membership.
This course is taught over four evenings, for those with busy weekends.
The first two sessions will be in the classroom, during which we explore the fundamental principles of trip planning and preparation through group discussions and activities at the University of Calgary.
On the third and fourth evenings, we will go outside to practice the various leadership roles required to put your planned trip into action over the course of an easy hike in a Calgary city park.
This course is focused on hiking leadership for low-risk hikes and other land-based activities, but the skills learned will be directly transferable to leading groups in every conceivable outdoor environment. So while the terrain is aimed at beginner leaders, experienced leaders looking to refresh, upgrade, or reality-check their skills will have much to learn and are very welcome.
