SUMMARY:Field Leader Course + Overnight\, Map & Compass (5-Day)
DESCRIPTION:Receive four of the Outdoor Council of Canada’s certifications while on a 5-Day Backpacking Trip including the Field Leader Hiking\,  Overnight Module and both the Go Outside Map and Go Outside Compass Course. The course will help deepen your connection with a community of practitioners committed to creating and delivering quality outdoor experiences across Canada. This course will give you the opportunity to learn and enhance essential leadership and backpacking skills and deepen your considerations of safety\, comfort and enjoyment for your participants. \n\nBring a group to an overnight outdoor environment.\nProvide a meaningful experience for your group\, whether the purpose is educational\, pleasure\, health\, well-being\, and/or connecting with nature.\nDesign a safe experience within the limits of your ability.\nIdentify the limit of your abilities and adjust accordingly.\nFeel reassured knowing you are using industry-accepted practices providing proper care to participants and ensuring due diligence.\n\nField Leader courses focus on the leadership skills and attributes required to take a group outdoors and provide an effective framework for managing risks. Courses include instruction and practice on planning and preparing an outdoor trip within an organizational structure. Our courses apply for outdoor clubs\, camps\, outfitters\, schools\, community programs\, outdoor centres\, or any other context where outdoor activities are part of programming. Courses are designed to prepare Field Leaders to lead others in low-risk terrain. Our leadership courses are complementary to other outdoor courses such as technical skills and first aid. With sufficient experience and training\, Field Leaders can lead others in higher-risk terrain and remain within their Scope of Practice without needing more advanced training with the OCC.

That’s why this course takes place in the heart of the backcountry\, surrounded by the spectacular winter scenery of Elk Lakes Provincial Park. \nOver the course of this overnight adventure\, you’ll travel into Elk Lakes Cabin\, develop your leadership abilities through hands-on learning\, and earn a nationally recognized outdoor certification. Along the way\, participants will engage with Winter Field Leader concepts through experiential learning activities\, discussions\, and practical leadership opportunities. \nUpon arrival at the Elk Lakes Cabin\, you’ll have time to settle in and enjoy complimentary appetizers and charcuterie before preparing your own dinner using the hut’s kitchen facilities. The evening concludes with course discussions\, mountain camaraderie\, and a campfire under the winter sky. \nNovember 22 | Day 2\nThe morning begins with a short local adventure around the hut area\, followed by the final course assessment. \nParticipants will then have the opportunity to practice and refine their leadership skills while taking turns leading portions of the hike back to the trailhead. \nOur goal is to return to the Elk Pass Trailhead no later than 3:00 p.m. \nWhat’s Included\n\nACMG Hiking Guide & OCC Instructor\nOCC Winter Field Leader Manual & Certification Fee\nElk Lakes Hut Accommodation (1 night)\nAccess to Snowshoes and Traction Devices (conditions dependent)\nComplimentary Appetizers & Charcuterie\nWater Filtration Equipment\nGroup Safety and Emergency Equipment\n\nWhat’s Not Included\n\nTransportation\nKananaskis Conservation Pass\nBackpack (50–80 litres recommended)\nSleeping Bag\nPersonal Winter Clothing and Layers\nMeals: Lunch (2)\, Dinner (1)\, Breakfast (1)\n\nFor more information about the Elk Lakes Hut and its amenities\, please visit the linked website above. \nCancellation Policy:\nCancellation by The Path Less Taken due to circumstances beyond our control (e.g.\, park closures\, highway closures\, natural disasters): Participants may transfer their full payment to another PLT trip or receive a full refund. \nParticipant cancellations made within 14 days of the trip start date: 50% refund or option to transfer full payment to another PLT trip \nNo refund for no-shows
