Field Leader Navigation Course (Map and Compass)

Prerequisites: None
Training: Successful graduates will be trained with a ‘Using Maps and Using Compass’ designation following the OCC Curriculum and receive a certificate of completion.
Pre-Course Preparation: Participants are encouraged to read the GO Maps and GO Compass Manuals. Once you have registered you will be sent an email containing a link to these Manuals.
Course Duration: 16 hours over two days
Course Format: The course is usually split between in-class learning (75%) and field exercises (25%).
Course Content: The course delivers a comprehensive introduction to navigation with a focus on reading and interpreting maps as well as using a compass for practical use in the back-country. Topics include: types of physical maps, map symbols and other features, and using the map in the field, using a compass without a map and using the map and compass together.
Cancellation policy: There will be no cancellation fee for COVID-19 related cancellation or postponement. Otherwise, there is a $25 administration fee to cancel up to 7 days prior to the start of the course. No refund available after 7 days prior. However, if registration numbers are too low we reserve the right to cancel the course two weeks before the course starts. In such an event you will be refunded the entire course fee.
